Big flaw: BBC pundit criticizes Chelsea for a significant flaw in their performance

BBC pundit criticizes Chelsea for a significant flaw in their performance

Garth Crooks has put Enzo Fernandez into his BBC team of the week, but in fact his entry for the midfielder ended up being more of a rant about Chelsea’s ill discipline in the last couple of weeks, which has seen them pick up two reds in two games.

“You can’t score two goals and win the game for your team with 10 men, and not get in my team. I’ve seen Fernandez have better games, but he won’t score two more important goals. What is wrong with Chelsea? In consecutive weeks, they have had Reece James and Conor Gallagher, both wearing the captain’s armband, sent off for bookable offences. What’s that about?

“The Blues just about got away with it against Brighton and spent the final eight minutes hanging on. Seldom will they perform in such a reckless fashion and come away with all the points. You’d have thought they would have learned their lesson at Newcastle.”

He’s got a point. It’s hard for us to blame Conor because we love him so much and know he’d never deliberately do anything to hurt the team, but this was remarkably stupid, and you need an outside voice sometimes to make things clear.

Luckily, as Crooks points out, the whole situation was perfect for Enzo to thrive in. He really had to step up and be a leader and a defender as well as scoring the goals, and he did all of them with aplomb.
