Chelsea fans united in praise for Thiago Silva’s performance against Brighton

Thiago Silva was a man under the microscope this Sunday in Chelsea’s match at home to Brighton.

The 39-year-old Blues defender really struggled in last weekend’s defeat to Newcastle United, but he responded in such a classy fashion this afternoon.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side held on with 10 men to secure a 3-2 win over Brighton in the Premier League.

Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill both scored early to put Chelsea in front. There was a mini collapse before half-time, though.

First of all, Facundo Buonanotte reduced the deficit with a goal for Brighton before Conor Gallagher was sent off for picking up his second booking.

Fernandez’s spot-kick turned out to be the winning goal in the second period, but Joao Pedro’s late goal set up a very nervous finish inside Stamford Bridge

Blues stand firm

It was a gutsy defensive performance from the Blues to resist the Brighton pressure.

It was a starting back four on Sunday that consisted of four centre-backs, which certainly worked in the hosts’ favour.

Thiago Silva, 39, was very busy in the heart of defence with some excellent tackles and blocks.

Speaking via FIVE’s YouTube channel this week, Rio Ferdinand suggested that the criticism of Silva was a bit overboard after Newcastle.

The Brazilian proved it was a rare off-day last week because he was back to his usual self versus Brighton.

Thiago Silva applauded by Chelsea fans

A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media flocked to celebrate the individual display from Silva.

The veteran centre-half defended superbly well, especially in the second-half when his team were a man light.
