Chelsea linked with Premier League defender, but he may not be a significant upgrade

Ben Jacobs’ latest exclusive for Caughtoffside claims that Chelsea have put Marc Guehi on their shortlist as their search for a centre back expands.

The defender was a top player for our academy and there was quite a lot of surprise when he was sold to Crystal Palace – although there’s always been a sense that we would come back for him one day if he continues to develop as he has.

If we don’t sign him, we’re sure that other top Premier League teams will be in for him, and this summer looks like a good moment for him to take a leap up the table. Palace will want big money for an established player who is breaking into the England setup, however.

Guehi is a class player, and we never should have sold him. He looks like he’s ready to be a Premier League and England stalwart for years to come. Is his ceiling higher than Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and the rest of our current crop? That’s a tougher one to answer.
