Chelsea set new English Premier League record as they lost 1-0 to Manchester City.

The Blues continued to limp through a season that has felt dead since about February, and are now guaranteed statistically to complete their worst ever Premier League season.

Defeat today means that they can finish with a maximum of 49 points. And even that is very unlikely, seeing as their final two games of the season are against very strong opposition.

That points total tallies perfectly with the miserable feeling that has accompanied the season every since that heavy preseason defeat to Arsenal that seemed to represent the two clubs diverging.

The first year of the Todd Boehly ownership has been a catastrophe, and this points tally stat only begins to start the story – the vast sums of money wasted, the terrible squad building decisions with years of consequences, the unbothered performances, the goal droughts and the mistakes.

Still, the good news for the manager who arrives to take over next season, is that things can only get better. Home and away, goals scored and goals conceded, everything is primed to improve. The efforts levels can’t get any lower, and a new coach who is able to motivate this group can expect instant results.

We’re a team in the bottom half with a budget amongst the biggest in Europe. That is a disgrace – but one we should be able to shake off in the next 12 months.
