Chelsea still chasing top target from this summer, but major reasons make it unlikely for him to come, according to sources

Simon Phillips’ Substack is a constant source of new and interesting information, and sometimes some stuff from the inside that’s really hard to get your head around (perhaps unsurprisingly given some of the decisions we’ve seen made by the new ownership).

Today he’s reporting that Chelsea retain an interest in Michael Olise, the Crystal Palace winger they came close to signing in the summer. Apparently, we’re still interested and want to sign him in the future.

Now that doesn’t surprise us totally – he’s a fantastic player and one who will very soon be moving to a top team, for sure. But our specific circumstances makes it feel unlikely it’s Stamford Bridge he comes to.

Firstly we seemed to fall out with Palace in our attempts to sign him, so they’d likely prefer to send him elsewhere. Then there’s the fact that we signed Cole Palmer instead, and he’s been brilliant.

We also have a lot of players already in his position. So while many fans might be happy to see Noni Madueke or Mykhailo Mudryk go, they’re locked in on massive transfer fees and long contracts, so don’t hold your breath.
