Christopher Nkunku returns as three things spotted in Chelsea training before Brighton game

Nkunku returns as three things spotted in Chelsea training before Brighton clash

Chelsea endured a freezing cold training session ahead of their Premier League clash against Brighton this weekend. Mauricio Pochettino will have just one more session to prepare his squad for a difficult test against Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

It gives Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia the chance to build up their fitness levels as both players target making their first competitive appearance of the season on Sunday afternoon. Nkunku has been sidelined since August with a knee injury after completing a £52million move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Lavia arrived at the club with an issue before suffering a setback in September, but now the Belgian midfielder is closing in on a return to action. Ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Brighton, Pochettino was asked if Nkunku and Lavia will be ready for the weekend.

The Argentine replied: “We need to assess tomorrow and then decide. They are close, but we need tomorrow to make a decision.

“Maybe Lavia is the more difficult [one] but we need to assess Nkunku for tomorrow – we don’t believe we can recover some players. But there is one more training session and we can see tomorrow,” Pochettino added.

So, with that being said, football.london has taken a look at three things spotted in Chelsea training ahead of their Premier League clash against Brighton.

Christopher Nkunku return

Arguably the most positive news of the season so far is that Christopher Nkunku could make his first competitive appearance for Chelsea this weekend. The Frenchman has been involved in training this week after recovering from a knee injury sustained back in August.

The Frenchman was pictured moving freely in training and will have the chance to prove his fitness with one more session on Saturday. It’s unclear at this stage whether Pochettino will be willing to throw Nkunku straight back into action against Brighton or if he will take a cautious approach and ease him back with a busy fixture schedule ahead.

Talented youngster involved

Alex Matos was spotted taking part in first team training on Friday afternoon. The 19-year-old completed a free transfer to Chelsea in the summer.

Matos has played just a single minute of Premier League action so far this season – featuring as a late substitute in the 2-0 win against Fulham – but has been named in the matchday squad in recent weeks. The youngster is capable of playing anywhere in midfield and with a hectic run of games ahead, he could be involved more in the coming weeks.

Levi Colwill and Moises Caicedo decisions

Levi Colwill and Moises Caicedo were both pictured in training this week. Pochettino may look to use both players at full-back against Brighton with Reece James and Marc Cucurella set to miss the game through suspension.

Caicedo played at right-back for a period of time under Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton, whilst Colwill has been deployed at left-back under Pochettino in Ben Chilwell’s absence. Axel Disasi is another option for Pochettino at right-back, with Malo Gusto expected to miss out once again as he recovers from injury.
