Finally: Mauricio Pochettino reveals who will take Chelsea’s penalties

The summer signing from Manchester City opened his goalscoring account for his new club earlier this month from the spot against Burnley and was successful again from 12 yards in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal last weekend.

Prior to sending David Raya the wrong way with a calmly taken penalty, Palmer was seen arguing with Raheem Sterling over who should take on the responsibility.

Pochettino insists he will leave it up to the players to decide in the heat of the moment who should take penalties from now on but suggested if Palmer is on the pitch he is the man for the job.

He said: ‘There are a few players who can take the penalty. It’s about their feelings. As a coaching staff we give them the responsibility to decide on the pitch.

‘It’s not only one player, that this player is going to be in charge. It shows that Cole was ready to take the two penalties he took.

‘Normally it is going to be him if he is on the pitch. But if not I’d be happy with Raheem, with Nico (Jackson).

‘For me the most important thing is to have the decision and the personality to go.’

Summer signing Christopher Nkunku could yet provide Chelsea and Pochettino with another option from the penalty spot with the France international nearing a first team return.

The former RB Leipzig star is yet to play a competitive game for his new club after suffering a knee injury in pre-season but is closing on making his return.

‘He’s doing well and working really hard,’ said the Chelsea manager. ‘He’s very close. Hopefully we can have him involved as soon as possible.

‘He is a really important player for us.’
