I am sorry’: Manager admits he is not happy his player left for Chelsea this summer

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi has now admitted that he was not happy that one of his former players left for Chelsea this summer.

He told TNT Sports that the sale of Moises Caicedo was one which saw a great player leave his club before the season began.

Caicedo joined Chelsea as a record transfer in the Premier League, despite interest from Liverpool too.

While he has not quite hit the heights he had with the Seagulls as of yet, he has still proven to be an important member of the side instantly.

His absence from the starters was felt hard last weekend, when the Blues were heavily beaten by Newcastle.

De Zerbi has now admitted that his side has had to take quite the change from the one that played last season before some big names left.

De Zerbi on Caicedo

He said: “I am sorry to lose great players. Caicedo and Mac Allister, I am not happy. But I know very well where I am working, and the policy of the club is like this.

“We are playing with four attackers. Last season Mac Allister often played as a number 10, and so we had more control of the game. Now, we are playing with four attacker – Joao Pedro, Ansu Fati, Evan Ferguson and Welbeck. They are not a number 10. When they get the ball, they want to score.”

The Blues look forward to welcoming the Seagulls to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, as they search for a return to winning ways in the top flight.

The meeting will be the first time that Caicedo has faced his former club in the league, and he will be hoping the reunion goes a little better than Marc Cucurella’s when he travelled back to Brighton last season.
