Latest news discussed Disgraceful stats from Chelsea – Spurs show how tedious VAR slows down football

The stats from tonight’s game show the ball was in play for a pathetic 23 minutes of the 56 minute first half.

Yes this was a particularly mad game, but mad games are what you get when VAR is rewatching everything that happens in a game, and needs a couple of minutes to judge each ones. Moments that would be lost in the chaos are now analysed sequentially and exhaustively.

This is not a complaint about refereeing one way or the other, this is just pointing out that this is a totally unsustainable situation for football to be in. They’re doing everything they can in terms of refereeing tackles to make things more exciting and flowing, then losing ten times the time they’ve saved in having players stand around while men in an office somewhere else in the country watch footage back on TVs.

Meanwhile the fans in the stadium, the most important people for all, see nothing happen, understand little of what’s going on, and are expected to pay through the nose for the privilege.
