Mauricio Pochettino confirm Chelsea are ‘ready’ for January transfer window amid Ivan Toney move

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed Chelsea’s stance on new signings ahead of the January transfer window. The Blues spent over £350million in the summer – but further additions could arrive in the new year.

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed a £4billion takeover at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have spent over £1billion on new players. The West London outfit are expected to continue their spending heading into the January transfer window – with a new striker, defender and goalkeeper thought to be under consideration.

The most notable transfer rumour linked with Chelsea has been Ivan Toney. The Brentford striker has attracted interest from the Blues, Arsenal and Tottenham after he changed agents earlier this year.

Toney is currently serving his ban from football and is set to return to Premier League action on January 17. Brentford have set a £60million asking price to let the 27-year-old leave the club.

When asked about Chelsea’s plans for the January transfer window, Pochettino responded: “Football is really dynamic. Maybe we are thinking in a different way two weeks ago or three weeks ago.

“Ready and working with the sporting directors and owners to try to be ready. The moment the transfer window is open, we can see if the team needs, if the squad needs to add some players in the position we are talking, an offensive position.”

Pochettino’s comments hint that a new attacker is among the Blues’ priorities heading into the new year following their struggles in front of goal so far this season. Nicolas Jackson has been inconsistent in attack, whilst Armando Broja continues to struggle with injury problems.

Toney would bring guaranteed goals to Stamford Bridge whilst adding more physicality to Pochettino’s side. Cole Palmer – who arrived from Manchester City on deadline day – has been moved into a more central role in attack of late and it has paid dividends for Chelsea so far.

Christopher Nkunku could return to action following the November international break with the Frenchman expected to increase Chelsea’s goal threat. One thing is clear: Pochettino is set to have more control over the Blues’ transfer strategy and he is already planning his next move in the market.
