Mauricio Pochettino cut a disappointed figure after Chelsea demoralized 4-1 defeat against Newcastle
Mauricio Pochettino cut a disappointed figure after Chelsea demoralized 4-1 defeat against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues, hoping to build on their recent run of results, which included a 4-1 win over Tottenham and a 4-4 draw against Manchester City before the international break, were overrun by Newcastle at St. James Park, despite Eddie Howe’s side missing a few key players.
Raheem Sterling levelled the score for Chelsea after Alexander Isak’s 13th minute opener, but the Blues made some costly mistakes in the second half, which ended up allowing the hosts to score three more goals through Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon, as captain, Reece James was sent off after a second yellow.
In his post-match analysis of Chelsea’s performance, Pochettino said he was disappointed with what he saw and said his side didn’t play like something was at stake.
“We didn’t show we were playing for something important,” said the Chelsea coach.
“That makes me angry and disappointed.
“Even if we are young, it makes me very, very angry. We cannot miss the opportunity to show ourselves at our best.
“People around the world praised Chelsea after Tottenham and Man City. We need more strength in our mental game and to compete.”
