Mauricio Pochettino given a chance to evaluate four Chelsea super stars before Todd Boehly final decision

Todd Boehly has been encouraged to pass judgement on Mauricio Pochettino until the Chelsea manager has the chance to work with four specific players. The former Tottenham boss has been subject to criticism following the Blues’ disappointing defeat to Brentford at the weekend.

After enjoying a four-game unbeaten streak, the Bees brought Chelsea’s run to an end with stinging strikes from Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbuemo. Despite having shown clear signs of improvement prior to the clash, Pochettino was slammed for not being able to pick apart Thomas Frank’s side.

However, Chelsea have been nursing an injury crisis in recent week – a wave of absences which left the Argentine no choice but to select two goalkeepers and just one forward in his matchday squad against Brentford. The west Londoners’ only attacking outlet on the bench just so happened to be one of their most inexperienced players, Deivid Washington, who hadn’t featured in the English top-flight until Saturday.

As obscene as it is, sections of the Blues fanbase have called for Pochettino to be sacked. However, Boehly has been urged to stick with the Argentine until four key players return from the sidelines and fuel his project at Stamford Bridge.

“We need to get Reece James back playing,” said Jason Cundy on talkSPORT. “[Wesley] Fofana back. It’s another problem. [Ben] Chilwell, always injured as well. Haven’t seen [Christopher] Nkunku!”

While Fofana, Chilwell and Nkunku continue to nurse their respective knocks, Pochettino has already confirmed that James will start for Chelsea when they face Blackburn in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. The 51-year-old said: “I can confirm that he is going to start.

“I am going to confirm only one player and yes it is the captain. He is ready. It is good for him and for the team to start from the beginning of the game.”

While some Premier League sides often take their foot off the accelerator in the Carabao Cup, Pochettino is ready to shift into fifth gear. The Chelsea manager added: “Really important. I told you before we started the season.

“I think a competition like the Carabao Cup or FA Cup is really important for us. Tomorrow we are going to try and play with our best team. Some players that maybe we need to rest because we need to do some rest because after Saturday’s game, we cannot take some risk. In general we are going to try to put our our best team.”
