Chelsea veteran’s return to PSG blocked by factors

Jonathan Johnson’s exclusive column for Caughtoffside today covers Thiago Silva’s potential return to PSG, an idea that has been mentioned in recent days as his struggles this season have become a major talking point.

Johnson explained that the difficult manner of his departure makes any return very unlikely:

“Silva had some great years with PSG which he looks back fondly on, but in terms of a possible return one day after retirement, I think one obstacle might be the manner of his departure. Of course some of those involved in his departure are now gone, such as Leonardo, but it was still perhaps a surprisingly un-emotional exit,” Johnson wrote.

“It came at an awkward time of course due to the impact of Covid on the football world, it was the same with Edinson Cavani at that time too – two immensely popular figures, two loyal and long-serving players, but who didn’t get to say a proper goodbye.”

To be honest, we haven’t ever considered a return to PSG particularly likely. Not only was his departure pretty awkward, as outlined above, but beyond that they’ve entered a whole new era over the summer.

They have a new philosophy, a new coaching staff and new players, and the last thing they want is to bring back one of the figureheads of the last generation, especially one who had an awkward exit.

And that’s before you get to the footballing side of things. Instead, we’re sure that Silva will return to Brazil and play out his remaining career back where it all began.
