Would Chelsea have performed better if Pochettino was on the touchline

Mauricio Pochettino has rejected suggestions that Chelsea missed his presence on the touchline during their Premier League defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Fresh from a brilliant 4-4 draw against Manchester City before the international break, Chelsea failed to measure up and contain the relentless pressing of the Magpies, who took advantage of some silly mistakes from the Blues to hand them a 4-1 defeat at St. James’ Park.

Pochettino was forced to watch the game from the stands after he was banned for his behaviour during the Man City draw, but the Argentine insists the suspension wasn’t the reason Chelsea were defeated.

He said after the clash: “It is not about being there or not. It is about being more mature, as a team we need to show a different energy, a capacity to compete. For me that is the key. Maybe you can feel it is a topic or not a topic.

“But that is why we were talking about being consistent. Sometimes it is like ‘ok we play Manchester City and everyone is going to be focused on us, we are going to fight until the end. If I need to put my head or dive for some action…but now we need to translate.

“The big teams perform every week or every three days in this way. That is a thing we need to set in the team.”
